Our History

Our caravan association was formed on 14th March 1979 - however, the caravan site which we all know and love has been in existence since 1965.

Many of our founder members were originally residents of this caravan site, as owned and managed until 1978 by the late Mr Ted Ellis. Unfortunately, in 1978, Ted Ellis decided that it was finally time to retire, and as such, to part with the caravan site and accompanying house. In order to allow residents the opportunity to take over management of the site to their own mutual benefits, owners of caravans on the site were offered the first opportunity to purchase the property.

A meeting of the site’s residents was held in August of 1978 to discuss the possible purchase of the caravan park, and met with a clear majority support for the setting up of an association for the purchase and management of the site. The following month a letter was sent to 71 caravan owners on the site, outlining proposals for forming an association, financed by a share holding, and inviting applications for membership to the association by 1st October. 50 applications for membership were received, and a Working Committee was established to organise the formation of the association, register it under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965 and proceed to acquire the caravan site for the mutual benefit of all members.

The Inaugural meeting of the Selby Field Co-Partnership Caravan Association was held on 15th October 1978. During that first meeting a draft of our Rules of Association was considered, and our first committee members were elected by vote (Chairman: Norman Gardner, Secretary: Charles Chapman, Treasurer: Barbara Kent and a further 8 committee members).

It was one year and a great deal of work later, on 13th October 1979 that the Selby Field Co-partnership Caravan Association Limited was officially opened - the first Caravan Co-Partnership in Kent. The founder members of our association on that day were;
